The Life and Works of Peter Hand

Southwell Minster

After I had finished my training at Goldsmiths College School of Art, and spent twelve months as a model maker inthe Styling Department of the Ford Motor Company, I embarked on a career as a Freelance Sculptor. One day I happened upon the Offices of the Church Commiissioners and discovered they were looking for a sculptor to design and carve some details as part of a restoration programme they were doing on the exterior of the Chapter House at Southwell Minster in Nottingham.

I was engaged to carry out the work and spent a couple of years, working alongside the masons, on this project.

Revisiting Southwell in 2000, I took photos of the more accessible of my carvings, now more than forty years old. The theme of Fabulous Beasts which I carved were too high up to be able to record, but here are a few of the details I produced.
