Play Sculptures

The Beginning - Poole

While I was employed as a Lecturer at Bournemouth College of Art, in about 1965, I was approached by a colleague to submit some proposals for play sculptures for a major development being undertaken for Poole Town Centre, to be known as the Arndale Centre.

Not having done such work before, and there being no hurry as the development was not due for completion for several years, I took my time to consider the problem and produced some small scale sketch-models to submit to the architects (pictures). Given the architects approval I made the three sculptures in Utile - a West African hardwood - using techniques intended to reflect boat building - a local tradition.

The sculptures were delivered and installed prior to the Arndale Centre opening in 1969. (pictures of sculptures in use)
